Chaos: When the present determines the future, but the approximate present doesn´t approximately determine the future.

Wikipedia, Chaos Theory

I love chaos and feel challenged by it. I remember reading, years ago, a scientific magazine about chaos and they defended that even in chaos there was order. So true in nature. So true in life.Chaos Theory  is a mathematical theory applied to dynamic systems, highly sensitive to the initial conditions, at it is enough a small difference in those conditions to leave the results impossible to predict.

Chaos Theory  is a mathematical theory applied to dynamic systems, highly sensitive to the initial conditions, at it is enough a small difference in those conditions to leave the results impossible to predict.

To write this post I went to Wikipedia for facts, and if you read the whole article about the Chaos Theory you will notice that it states that under the right conditions chaos will spontaneously evolve into a lockstep pattern, a spontaneous order, a routine.

Isn´t it a marvelous idea? Discover the Ariadne thread in the midst of chaos? How things, even in nature fall into their place naturally?

Ariadne thread, in the greek mythology, is a legend linked to Ariadne, daughter of Minos King of Crete and the queen Pasiphaë, and this legend had its origin in Ariadne´s involvement in the myth of  the Minotaur and Theseus. Her father put her in charge of the labyrinth where sacrifices were made as part of reparations.

Ariadne would be linked to mazes and labyrinths forever. Ariadne´s thread is solving a problem that can have multiple apparent solutions, like a physical maze, logic puzzle or ethical dilemma, where logic is exhaustively applied to all possible choices.

In our human lives, chaos can devastate us like an earthquake destroys everything. It can make us feel super, super defeated and question everything, sometimes even life itself. Chaos can be painful and discomfort able. It shake us inside out.

As we can easily see chaos doesn´t happen only in human life, but it also happens in nature. I guess the big difference here, is that nature doesn´t analyse or ponder or think when chaos happens. It just happens, it is part of a process.

Indeed, we lose much of our time and effort analysing…why this happened to me?

In the midst of our personal chaos, we could try to look for Ariadne´s thread, the order, the solution to the puzzle, and feel gratitude because being in the midst of chaos means that our life is moving and evolving. Life is living water.

Maybe it can bring us solace and comfort rest in the assurance that chaos precedes rebirth, and I quote Lao Tzu, in the midst of chaos, there is also an opportunity.
